There’s a cliched saying that goes something like that Behind every man’s success, there is a woman.  Well, let’s twist it up a bit shall we?  Behind every great music video and movie is a great director.  And that really sums up Baljit Singh Deo, the man behind the punjabi movie  Mirza – The Untold Story, which supposedly has the biggest budget for a punjabi movie and along with it the biggest hopes as well.  Especially after the first promo of Mirza The Untold Story was released on youtube.

 Early Life

While being born in Jalandhar, Punjab, he moved to England at an early age where he grew up and then to the United States and currently resides in Vancouver, Canada. You’d think that someone as prominent in the Punjabi media circles would have been in this business for a long time.   Think again, Baljit Singh Deo did his studies in Microelectronics and went onto become an engineer for many years while working for such companies as Motorola and EA Sports until his passion for photography brought about a career change at the age of 29.  This passion for photography was always there as in his early twenties, he would take a long bus ride to a small camera shop and get excited at seeing the camera equipment.

Enough with being a development director and enter a whole new field of photography, film making, and post production.  Always listen to your heart is what they always say….or well most of the time.   Well it turned out to be a really good decision and Baljit Singh Deo has excelled in his second life with his photography and video direction.  Only recently, his photography work was one of the top 10 finalists in  the prestigious Hasselblad Masters competition.  Most importantly, he’s doing what he loves for a living : photography and directing.

Baljit Singh Deo founded Deo Studios:  a creative design firm offering services in photography, film, and design.

The Directing Journey : Take One

Baljit Singh Deo started off his directing passion and now profession by directing a music video for the Canadian based Punjabi singer, Sukhdev Sukha.  Afterwards, he would direct the infamous Amrinder Gill’s Dildarian.  That music video was a blockbuster and paved the way for more ventures in music video directing.  Some of the music videos directed by Baljit Singh are as follows:

  • Sukhdev Sukha’s Court Case
  • Amrinder Gill’s Dildarian
  • Jazzy B’s Surma
  • Sukhshinder Shinda’s Punjabi Clap
  • Aman Hayer’s Dil Nayee Lagda
  • Arif Lohar’s Jugni
  • Gippy Grewal’s Fower and Hathiyar
  • BattleKATT’s HM ‘ s String is King

From Music Videos to Movies : Take Two

After tasting success with music videos, Bal Deo would make the transition to directing a big name movie starring Harbhajan Mann with Jag Jeondeyan de Mele.  He was also a co-writer of the movie.

In his second essay at directing and writing, Bal doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned towards his own and Punjabi cinema’s success with Mirza – The Untold Story.  The first sneak preview of the movie has set really high expectations of the movie and the Punjabi movie lovers are waiting for it’s release in April of 2012.
