Miss Pooja makes a comeback to Punjabi movies with the movie Pooja Kiven aa.  The movie has been directed by Nidhi Sharma and the release date is March 22, 2013.

The past year, Punjabis had to bid farewell to prominent multi talented personalities :  Dara Singh and Jaspal Bhatti.  PTC Awards honored both of these celebrities with lifetime achievement awards.  Dara Singh’s son, Vindu Dara Singh, and Savita Bhatti, the wife of late Jaspal Bhatti were present to accept the honor.

The actor and singer, Diljit Singh, and the comedian Kapil Sharma entertained the crowd with their hosting, especially Kapil Sharma.  There were numerous celebrities present at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards which made it memorable.  These included Jimmy Shergill, Divya Dutta, Gurdas Mann, Gippy Grewal, Satinder Sartaj, Satwinder Satti, Preeti Sapru, Jazzy B, Honey Singh, Sunny Deol, Raveena Tandon, Manisha Lamba, Himesh Reshamiya to name a few.

In between the show, Satinder Sartaj unveiled his new album and Miss Pooja also did not waste any time promoting her upcoming movie, Pooja Kivein aa.   Sunny Deol was also present to promote his upcoming movie, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, and stated he would like to do a Punjabi movie in the future.

Jaspal Bhatti, the popular comedian and satirist, passed away in a road accident in Punjab.  This sad news came when he was coming from a promotion show  of his upcoming movie, Power Cut from Bathinda and returning back to Jalandhar.  His son, Jasraj Bhatti, and actress of the movie Power Cut were also injured in the accident.  It is reported that Jaspal Bhatti was pronounced dead after medical examination at the hospital.  Jasraj and Surilie Gautam have been shifted to a hospital in Ludhiana.

Jaspal Bhatti was a prominent figure in Punjabi circles, famous for his comic and satirical acts in Ulta Pulta , Flop Show, Jijaji and Mahaul theek Hai.  He was born in Amritsar on March 3, 1955 and had graduated as a electrical engineer from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

PlanetPunjab expresses its deep sadness at this mishap and condolences to his family.

Ajj De Ranjhe

About the movie, the story takes on the police and public relationship in a way that makes one wonder why the public should afraid to approach the police and tries to improve the image of cops.  Furthermore, the subject of drug abuse is also touched upon in the backdrop in a subtle way.

Seen as one of the icons in the revival of Punjabi Cinema, Manmohan Singh, mentioned in an interview that Reliance would be producing the movie and that this is the first time in Punjabi cinema.

It is also interesting to note that Param Dhillon will be doing the editing of the film.  If the name does not ring a bell, then he was the editor of the Bollywood movie, Delhi Belly.  Param steps into Punjabi cinema with this Manmohan Singh movie.

Sushil Kumar won Silver medal in Wrestling to bring India’s final count in the 2012 Olympics to six medals, doubling their medal count from the previous games.

Yogeshwar Dutt had a great final round in Wrestling as he secured another medal for India : a Bronze in Wrestling.

Mary Kom lost her semifinal match in Boxing.  However, she won Bronze medal adding the medal tally to 4 for India.

A lot was expected from Devendro Singh Laishram in boxing, however, he lost in the QuarterFinals.  Though it must be stated that he has a bright future in boxing for India.

Mary Kom has secured atleast a Bronze for India in Women’s Boxing.   A lot is expected from her and she might go all the way to glory for Gold.

Vijender Singh has bowed out in the QFs in boxing against Atoev.

 Day 4 (July 31) Review

Archery

India failed to impress in Archery.  J Talukdar, C Swuro were defeated in the round of 32.  R Banerjee and Tarundeep Rai won their respective matches in the round of 32 but bowed out in the round of 16.

Badminton

Kashyap Parupali advanced to the next round of 16 Nyuyen Tm  in straight games

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa won their group match in Womens Doubles, however they could not qualify to the next round

The mixed doubles duo of V Diju and Jawala Gutta lost their match and thus could not advance to the next round.

Boxing

In boxing, India did well. In the first match, Devendro Singh Laishram won his match comfortably with two knockdowns in the Men’s Light Fly (49kg) division and qualifies to next round of 16.

Manoj Kumar won his match as well in the Men’s Light Welter (64kg) division defeating Serdar Hudayberdiyev of Turkmenistan.  Hence advancing to the round of 16.

Judo

In the women’s 63kg division, GarimaChaudhary lost the match Y Ueno of Japan.

Rowing

In the Men’s Singles Skulls, Sawarn Singh finished fourth in his heat and thus going out of the medal contention.

In the Men’s Lightweight Doubles Skulls, Sandeep Kumar and Manjeet Singh finished last in their heat  and thus will not be competing for a medal

Tennis

In the Men’s Doubles second round, Bhupathi and Bopanna lost their match against the the French duo of  BENNETEAU. GASQUET Richard GASQUET R.

Weightlifting

In the Men’s 69kg division, KATULU Ravi Kumar finished 15th.

Day 3 (July 30) Review

Day 3 was a mixed bag for India.  India opened its account with Gagan Narang winning the Bronze Medal.

There was controversy in the Boxing match where Sumit Sangwan was given a controversial ruling by the referees.  Everybody including the commentators thought he had dominated the match howevery judges gave another decision.

10m Men’s Air Rifle

• Abhinav Bindra, the hero of the last Olympics,  failed to qualify for the final round
• Gagan Narang won Bronze in the final round

Archery

•  Bombayla Devi Laishram advanced to round of 16 in Archery but could not go further than that

Tennis

• Vishnu Vardhan lost in mens singles  in the first round
• Bhupati/Bopanna advance to next round after winning the First Round in Doubles
• The duo of Paes/Vardhan advance to next round

Boxing

• Sumit sangwan lost a controversial match in Light Heavy (81kg) category with a score of 14-15 in the round of 32

Hockey

• India lost 2-3 to the Netherlands in their first match at the Olympics.  After trailing 0-2, India did well to fight back and tie the game at 2-2. However, the Dutch came out on top at the end of the day with a score of 3-2.

Badminton

•     Saina Nehwal advanced to round of 16 in women’s singles with a easy win

•  Ashwini Ponappa and Jwala Gutta won their match in group play  in women’s doubles

Gagan Narang did well in the qualifying phase of the event with a score of 598, which enabled him to enter the finals of the 10m Air Rifle.  The other Indian, Abhinav Bindra, who had won Gold at the Sydney games in 2008, was one of the favorites  but he was not able to qualify for the final round.   In the finals, each shooter was  given 10 shots to add to his qualifying score.  The competition was stiff, with the top 3 shifting up and down with each attempt.  After falling out of the top 3, Narang came back strong with his final shot with a final score of 701.1 to secure a Bronze medal for himself as well as opening the account for India.

It is interesting to note that Narang still has two more events in which he will take part in the Olympics.  We wish him the best in those events.
